Report lists toys to avoid during holiday shopping

Every year, the Alaska Public Interest Research Group gives out an annual toy warning. But this year it comes with a more urgent message.

With millions of toys recalled last year and new regulations still pending, consumer advocates want to make sure consumers are aware of what dangerous toys are still on store shelves.

“We picked this up at the Northway mall at a discount store and this is on our national watch list,” said AKPIRG Executive Director Gabe Aceves holding a toy truck.

The sturdy style top driver truck has a top spot in AKPIRG’s Trouble in Toy Land report.

“There’s lead content in the paint that exceeds legal limits for products that should be on the shelves and when the new laws go into affect this will actually be almost twice the legal amount of lead in the paint that’s safe for kids,” Aceves said.
