Consumer Protection

Alaska is the only state without a state-funded consumer protection agency. AkPIRG continues to fight hard for the establishment of a Consumer Protection Agency in Juneau, Anchorage and Fairbanks and has been at the forefront in demanding funding for the enforcement of consumer laws. AkPIRG also advocates for rural Alaskans who are particularly vulnerable to mail fraud and other rip-offs by lobbying for a toll-free Bush hot-line, and it continues to advise citizens of their consumer rights.

AkPIRG  requested that the Governor hold a consumer summit to discuss the gross lack of consumer protection in Alaska.  We held a protest mock "funeral" for consumer protection in Alaska.  We have been interviewed on radio (Alaska Public Radio Network, KSKA, KAKM), television and newspaper on this issue.

AkPIRG provides  recall lists to all major media outlets and produces yearly reports on dangerous toys and toxic play substances.
