Support Small Dollar Lending Reform

Many Alaskans living paycheck to paycheck turn to payday loans to fill a gap between their income and basic living expenses. However, the high cost of these short-term loans leaves many families trapped in a cycle of chronic debt and poverty.

House Bill 145, sponsored by Representative Stanley Wright, would protect Alaskans from high-interest loans by capping interest rates for small dollar loans at 36%.

Join us in urging lawmakers to support this common sense legislation.

A Year in Review: AKPIRG 2022 Annual Report

Curious about what AKPIRG worked on this past year? Check out our 2022 Annual Report to learn in detail about all of our programs and different issue areas. The report covers our work relating to Civic Engagement & Good Government, Regulatory Transparency & Accountability, Language Access, Broadband advocacy and more!

Additionally in the report you will find details about our board activities, a message from the executive director and a current list of our growing team at AKPIRG.

Decay Report: Salary Commission, Degradation Process

The recent political struggle over Legislative Salaries is  just the tip of the corruption iceberg. The larger issue exposed by this salary increase fiasco is powerful boards like the Alaska State Officers Compensation Commission making sweeping decisions with a disregard to Alaska's open meetings laws & public notices, and the Alaska Legislature passing bills without public testimony, as has happened numerous times this legislative session.

Going forward we hope that the legislature will carry out its duty to the public. Read more about the corrupt salary adjustment process from Dermot Cole here.

Alaska Air Miles Donation Drive

Do you have extra Alaska Airlines miles you’d be willing to part with for a good cause? Then we need your help! AKPIRG is headed down to Juneau this month to advocate for Alaskans by addressing a number of pressing consumer-related issues.

As a non-profit organization, we have a limited travel budget we are looking to supplement with donations whether financial or frequent flyer air miles. Our work is only made possible from the generous contributions of caring Alaskans like you.

If you are interested in donating please reach out to Camilla@akpirg.org! Thank you for your support.

Get Involved in the Fight or Digital Equity

Alaska’s Digital Equity plan now has a website: Broadband for Alaskans #ConnectAK! AKPIRG Broadband Specialist Brittany Woods-Orrison is part of the project and will be traveling throughout the state to do listening sessions and will be part of the process in writing the final plan. Check out the website to see when there will be listening sessions in your region and to see who's on the team.

The 2023 Indigenous Connectivity Summit (ICS) will be held May 22-24 in Anchorage, Alaska! This event will be hosted by the Indigenous Connectivity Institute and supported by our very own Broadband Specialist, Broadband Brittany!

"Indigenous communities across North America live without the reliable, affordable internet they need in today’s digital world. For seven years, a growing movement of connectivity champions has worked though the Indigenous Connectivity Summit (ICS) to change this.

This community-led forum is now the primary convening for Indigenous leadership and our allies working across the United States and Canada to build a digital future on our own terms."
