Good Government

Protecting democracy by ensuring accountability, transparency, and access to our government.

Accountability & Transparency

  • AKPIRG closely monitors all types of government appointments to state boards, commissions, and state agencies.

Additionally AKPIRG monitors these commissions and files complaints to provide accountability when an individual or agency is committing an ethics violation under state law.

If you have a tip or relevant information relating to appointments or ethics violations you can reach out to AKPIRG’s Good Government Director, Andrée McLeod: Andree@akpirg.org

  • For years, AKPIRG advocated for legislation to legally require the state to maintain a publicly accessible and user friendly Online Checkbook to document state spending.

In the 2022 legislative session the Alaska Legislature passed Senate Bill 25, officially making the Alaska Online Checkbook the law of the land.

AKPIRG will continue to monitor the implementation of the checkbook to ensure it is properly implemented, managed, and updated.

  • AKPIRG welcomes tips on matters that may require scrutiny. If you spot issues related to Alaska state and local government spending, ethics violations, subcontracting, or other issues, please let us know.

Regulatory Decay

  • In our efforts to keep Alaska’s elections fair, transparent, and protect democracy, AKPIRG brings forward concerns to the Alaska Public Office’s Commission (APOC) when violations of Alaska’s campaign finance laws occur.

This year our efforts kept $2,500,00 dollars of out of state dark money out of Alaska’s general election.

For more information on AKPIRG’s APOC work contact Andrée McLeod at Andree@akpirg.org.

  • The Alaska Industrial Development & Export Authority (AIDEA) is a public corporation of the State of Alaska that invests in everything from small businesses to major development projects across the state, including the Ambler Road & Pebble Mine.

AIDEA has amassed a long track record of misallocated and often secretive investments in principally extractive industries across our state while Alaskans have pleaded for information, explanation, and involvement with this decision-making body. We are working in the state legislature to demand greater transparency and scrutiny for agency appointments and the public process.

Voting & Elections

  • In the 2020 Redistricting process, AKPIRG lead the Alaskans for Fair Redistricting Coalition in advocating for a fair and equitable map for all Alaskans.

Our efforts were successful, and directly contributed to the current maps.

Additionally, AKPIRG has continued the fight against gerrymandering through ongoing legal efforts to reconcile illegal decisions made by the majority on the Alaska Redistricting Board.

  • AKPIRG is an organizational partner of the Alaska Voter Hub, a nonpartisan coalition that strives to increase access to the ballot box through direct voter engagement and policy.

In the 2022 election cycle, AKPIRG engaged with thousands of voters at community events & phonebanks, encouraging Alaskans to turn out to the polls.

  • AKPIRG works across many different language access issues, including voting. Check out our language access resources for voters here.
